Schüler beim Lernen“Transformative learning also means the 're-learning' of inner orientations” – Pia Helferich
On 12 May 2026, Prof. Dr Pia Helferich presented the findings of her research semester as part of Science Tuesday in Dieburg. The topic of her talk was ‘Transformative Learning and Life Skills’. A recording of the event is available.
Modern society is characterised by immense dynamism, constant social change and increasing intensity. In an environment where volatility is not a temporary phenomenon but an integral part of life, the mere accumulation of knowledge is insufficient. The necessary transformation processes are complex and challenge individuals on a personal, social and political level. Against this backdrop, the research project examines how educational formats must be designed to impart future-proof practical skills. For, as Pia Helferich puts it, “Transformative learning means a ‘re-learning’ of the learner’s inner orientations and values.”
Nevertheless, transformative learning must not be misused as a tool to dictate a particular worldview to learners. From an ethical perspective, teachers ideally do not act in a directive manner, but rather in a facilitative role, in order to preserve the autonomy of the individual. Although comprehensive transformative processes are often difficult to implement in the busy day-to-day teaching routine, the acquisition of specific skills (empathy, critical thinking) can be achieved through collaboration and real-world laboratories. In doing so, teachers consistently transform themselves into facilitators and, through this change of role, often undergo a transformative learning process themselves.
The gap between hard skills and life skills
As part of a meta-analysis conducted within the project, focusing on the field of strategic communication, the relationship between technical and life skills was examined. The findings reveal a clear discrepancy: whilst training continues to place a strong focus on ‘hard facts’ (e.g. marketing strategies, writing skills), the concept of lifelong learning is scarcely mentioned as an explicit competence. This proves paradoxical, as hard skills change in ever-shorter cycles, whilst cross-disciplinary life skills form the actual constant for a successful life.
Science Tuesday
Science Tuesday is a series of events at the Media Campus of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences where professors present their research findings to the public. Further information is available on the Media Campus website.
