Invitation to the symposium "Sustainability in media communication. Ethical requirements and practical solutions" in cooperation with the Communication and Media Ethics Section of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK), the Network Media Ethics, the Centre for Ethics in Media and the Digital Society (zem::dg), the Munich School of Philosophy and the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences on 22 and 23 February 2024 at the Munich School of Philosophy.
Originally developed in forestry, the term and concept of sustainability is now ubiquitous. Representatives of various disciplines are asking themselves how the demand for sustainability can be applied more consistently in their own context. The conference takes up this question from a media ethics perspective. How did sustainability become such a normatively charged term in the first place? What responsibility does strategic communication bear in the context of socio-ecological transformation? And what role should journalism play in the face of the climate crisis between neutral reporting and political activism?
On an individual ethical level, a more modest lifestyle is being called for and the question of the good life is thus being addressed anew. What role does the solution expertise of technology, in particular artificial intelligence (AI), play here?
